A lot of detectives in books, movies, and TV shows have sidekicks. These characters give you insights into the main character. There’s a character in Deadly Sins I who popped up out of nowhere. Actually, that’s pretty much the case with every character in Dez’s past, who’s introduced in the mini-series. I didn’t plot out every character. As I developed each story in Deadly Sins I and II, certain characters simply showed up, told me who they were, and how they knew Dez. Some are fleeting, but necessary. Others, like Clive Dixon, are more central to who Dez is or what Dez is about.
Clive is a low-level drug dealer turned forger, who Dez goes to for information in Deadly Sins II, but his first appearance is in Deadly Sins I (Omaha II – I renamed it “Duping Delight” in the print edition of the complete Deadly Sins mini-series.) You only get a little background, but as I thought more about him, I knew he needed to play a bigger role.
His attitude, the way he speaks, and how he interacts with Dez, in Deadly Sins II, made me realize that he’s her side kick. She trusts him to give her useful information, an occassional laugh, and knows that he looks after her in the streets of north Omaha. Dez cares about what happens to him. She’s willing to protect him from Katrina, if the need arises.
I’m not entirely sure what’s going to happen with him in Hush or North Downing, but I know he’ll be there. The first draft of Hush was a fleshing out of the overall story. As I begin the revisions, I know Dez’s official sidekick will have a thing or two to say about what’s happening. The question for me will be, “How big will his role become?”
What famous sidekicks do you like?
