Have you ever been at a bar, or nightclub, and some guy is a bit too in your face? Yeah, me too. I especially hate when they decide to grab one of my wrists. It’s the ultimate soft power play. Well, here’s what you need to remember: The thumb sucks. It’s weak all alone in that wrist grab. Another thing to remember is pulling your arm toward you, won’t work. I scoured the all-knowing internet to find a video that might give you some pointers. Check it out!
This is Krav Maga, not Hapkido. If it was Hapkido, you’d do it a bit differently, and end up putting the pushy guy into a wrist lock and arm bar. You wouldn’t be stepping away like in this video. You’d be in control of him and ready to kick him in the face. Why? Because he’d already be bent over, and a swift kick in the face might knock some sense into his sorry — never mind.
At any rate, this video is about self-defense, getting away, and being ready. I like it.
Wrist escapes are easy to learn, easy to do, and most importantly, effective. They get you out and ready to take control of the situation.

Note: As with every technique I post, 1) you need to practice with a willing adult participant, 2) I don’t endorse any of the sites or teachers, and 3) you need to be aware of and know the self-defense laws in your state. The purpose of these posts is to provide you with information about techniques I would use in certain situations. If you really want to become an expert in self-defense, then you need to find a dojang or dojo. If you have questions about how to identify a good dojang or dojo, post your questions in the comments.
