Have you ever seen someone tied up in a movie using duct tape? Ever wonder how you’d escape if you were in that scenario? I came across this great video from Ex-CIA officer, Jason Hanson. You might remember him from an episode of Shark Tank (I didn’t see it.)
Here, he explains exactly why criminals use duct tape and just how easy it is to get out of it.

You’ll need to practice this a few times. I know I have, and I’m still trying to break the tape! It’s not about strength. And it’ll hurt if you tape around exposed wrists. I tried it once that way. I was able to partially tear the tape. I also tried it with a rather loose sweater to protect my wrists. I escaped, but not by tearing the tape. I imagine that in an adrenaline-induced situation, breaking the tape would be easier, but you still should practice the movement. This does a few things for you:
- it reinforces the technique, and
- solidifies in your mind that you CAN escape.
Good luck! Go practice.
