cane

I know what you’re thinking, “How often am I carrying a cane around?” Valid question. Here’s the thing, a cane is basically a stick. So, if you know how to use a cane, then you know how to more effectively use that stick that you might find on the ground when some dumbass knocks you on your butt.

Personally, I love cane techniques. If you want to learn this one, be careful.

Do it slowly, not quickly. After all, you don’t want to hurt your training partner.

I found my cane in an antique store. It’s perfect. The crook (hook) is just wide enough to get around the neck. It’s got a pointy tip a bit like the ones in the picture up above. And, the wood is a bit rough in spots. This makes getting hit with it even more unpleasant, especially if I’m sliding it down your forearm, or along your shin bone. You can block, trap, deflect, take a person down, and even flip a person with a cane.

Is it practical to carry one when you don’t actually physically need it? Maybe not, but you could get an umbrella cane. It’s not as strong, but still useful. And, you won’t look at sticks the same way, again.

Weapons are everywhere. And, just about anything can be used as one.

Go practice.

Note: As with every technique I post, 1) you need to practice with a willing adult participant, 2) I don’t endorse any of the sites or teachers, and 3) you need to be aware of and know the self-defense laws in your state. The purpose of these posts is to provide you with information about techniques I would use in certain situations. If you really want to become an expert in self-defense, then you need to find a dojang or dojo. If you have questions about how to identify a good dojang or dojo, post your questions in the comments.
